The violin used is Beethoven 's own, though he himself was not a violinist. It is from a quartet of instruments made in Salzburg circa 1700 (the exact maker is unknown) gifted to the composer around 1800. The fortepiano heard on the recording was built in 1824, just three years before Beethoven 's death, and has been restored to what is believed to be an appropriate approximation of the sound Beethoven would have heard when these two violin sonatas were first performed.

Andreas Staier Piano (Forte), Daniel Sepec Violin. 1. llegro con brio. Variations for Violin and Piano in F on 'Se vuol ballare' (from 'Le nozze di Figaro'), WoO40. Ludwig van Beethoven Composer. Violin Sonata N. in A-, O. 3 Work. Andreas Staier Piano (Forte), Daniel Sepec Violin.

This double album brings together two recordings that broke new ground in the Beethoven discography. Disc one focuses on the transition from the violin sonata's transition from the Baroque to the Classical, and disc two explores the development of piano trio as it evolves from the Classical into the Romantic. These performances also document the sound of three outstanding period instruments (including Beethoven's own violin!) in superb performances by violinist Daniel Sepec, cellist Jean-Guihen Queyras and pianist Andreas Staier.
