Joining her in Laura Jane Grace & the Devouring Mothers is her fellow Against Me! bandmate, drummer Atom Willard, as well as bassist Marc Jacob Hudson.
Laura Jane Grace needed a break from her own very public identity. Six years ago, Grace famously announced that the traces of gender dysphoria in many songs by her bracing Florida punk band, Against Me!, had not been fictional muses. For her entire life, she had been uncomfortable in a man’s skin and clothes, so she had recently started the transition into the gender identity and body she’d needed for so long. Bought to Rot, Grace’s debut with her economical trio the Devouring Mothers, is the distraction she wanted. Relatively free of expectations and history, the record is intended both as an escape from Against Me! baggage and as an outlet for songs that don’t fit the band’s incisive agitprop schema.

Laura Jane Grace's life and career changed forever in 2012, when the lead singer of the Florida punk band Against Me! came out as trans.
Bought to Rot features 14 tracks about Grace’s fractured relationship with her adopted hometown of Chicago, true friendship, complicated romance, and reconciling everything in the en. according to a press release. Now the same age as Tom Petty was when he released his solo debut, the punk singer-songwriter was inspired by 1989’s Full Moon Fever to pen what’s described as her most musically diverse collection of songs ever. See their as-yet-announced itinerary below.

When Laura Jane Grace realized that her next musical project was going to involve a new band, she had a revelation. Bought to Rot, which will be released by the esteemed alt-country Chicago label Bloodshot Records, was written in spurts in Australia, Spain and in Grace’s hometown of Chicago during the past couple years. Rolling Stone recently caught up with Grace to discuss the new album, why she almost broke up Against Me! and why she’s now optimistic about that band’s future. How does Bought to Rot feel different from your last few Against Me! albums? That’s a complicated question.
Laura Jane Grace and the Devouring Mothers is the latest side-project from the Against Me! frontwoman. Unfortunately for Grace, deep dish is a staple of her current home of Chicago, perhaps explaining why her latest album - Bought to Rot from new side-project Laura Jane Grace and the Devouring Mothers - includes a song titled, quite directly, I Hate Chicago. That is merely one of the 14 new tracks from the album (out Nov. 9 on Bloodshot Records) that marks the latest chapter in Grace’s musical journey
Bought to Rot demonstrates that Laura Jane Grace is a master of all styles and, with all of her diverse influences, can do a lot of different things well. After all, this is the woman who talks on Twitter about working out to Fugazi, cites Bob Dylan, Tom Petty, and Madonna as major influences, appeared on a grindcore album earlier this year, and can be seen on YouTube with Miley Cyrus and Joan Jett covering The Replacements.
