In the early '80s, flutist Ransom Wilson was something of the poster boy for classical music: a young, good-looking hunk of a guy who played a mean flute and didn't mind mixing it up a bit with "popular" music. On this recording, he dipped his toes into minimalism and a fairly timid dip it was. Steve Reich's "Vermont Counterpoint," scored for ten flutes (all played, via tape, by Wilson) is a pretty enough, if forgettable, piece. All of the ideas had been worked over by Reich many times in other instrumentations, so the major benefit derived is simply hearing.

It was first performed in Japan and later recorded on EMI Angel Records by Ransom Wilson and Tom Raney on the album Glass Reich Becker. The 2019 scores have updated electronic elements and exists in three versions – one for solo flute and recorded accompaniment; a second for flute, percussion and recorded accompaniment; and a third for a quintet (flute, violin, clarinet and piano plus recorded accompaniment).

Frank Becker graduated from the Oberlin Conservatory of Music with a major in music composition. Upon graduation he was awarded two consecutive Ford Foundation Composer in Residence Fellowships. After completing his work on the grants he moved to Japan where he lived for fourteen years. His composition "Stonehenge" was recorded by Ransom Wilson on the album "Reich Glass Becker" (Angel Records) and his arrangement of Faure's "Pavane" was recorded by Lee Ritenour on Polygram. Frank's composition, "Five Canticles for Chorus and Orchestra" was performed by the Seattle Chamber of Singers and the Orchestra Seattle.
