Cathal McConnell (born 1944) is a musician and singer with The Boys of the Lough, a group of which he was a founder member. Coming from a family of flute-players in County Fermanagh, Northern Ireland, McConnell is an All-Ireland champion in both flute and whistle, both in 1962. His father Sandy, a well known traditional singer and musician, recorded for the BBC in the 1950s. His early musical collaborators were Tommy Gunn and Robin Morton

Boys of the Lough founding member Cathal McConnel has inspired Scottish musicians for more than two decades with his high-energy but sweetly lyrical approach to the Irish flute and whistles. Having studied the whistle under his father and a local teacher, Peter Flannagan, from the age of 11 and adding the flute by the age of 15, he continued to grow as a musician. An instrumental ode to traditional Irish music, McConnel's debut album, On the Lough Erne's Shore, was followed by For the Sake of Decency, recorded with vocalist Len Graham. His third album, Love Expectant Comes at Last, released in 2000, features a lengthy list of guest performers including Richard and Linda Thompson, Geoff Muldaur, Oscar Brand, Andy Statman, and Dave Mattacks.

Edmund On Lough Erne’s Shore. Big John’s Kitty The Hare. Cathal’s first recording. Recorded in 1978, much as what you’d expect from Cathal. A fine selection of tunes, well played, and a couple of songs, mainly from his home county of Fermanagh. Probably the first recording of "The Noon Lasses", made popular more recently by Michael McGoldrick. Accompaniment by Robin Morton on bodhran, and a guest appearance by Shetland guitarist "Peerie" Willie Johnston. Took him about 25 years to make the follow-up! Posted by Kenny 14 years ago.

Lough Erne's Shore Lyrics. One morning as I went a-fowling Bright Phoebus adorning the plain It was down by the shores of Lough Erne I met with a beautiful dame. Her voice was so sweet and so pleasing These beautiful notes she did sing The innocent fowl of the forest Their loving to her they did bring. It being the first time I met her My heart it did leap with surprise I thought that she could be nor mortal But an angel that fell from the skies  . What have the artists said about the song? I learned this Irish pastoral love song from Cathal McConnell of Co. Fermanagh. Lough Erne's Shore" Track Info. Somebody Connie Dover.
