The Word as Law was a massive influence on an entire generation of bands including my own, Econochrist. It’s the bridge to what Neurosis would become in later years. So put it back on your turntable. Step to the front the falling is today. Neurosis is: Jason Roeder Dave Edwardson Scott Kelly Steve Von Till Noah Landis. The 2017 reissue of The Word As Law was completely remastered by Bob Weston at Chicago Mastering. The album's cover artwork has been reworked by Neurosis' former live visual architect Josh Graham to match the previous reissued titles.
With The Word as Law, Neurosis began to transition from the hardcore punk of Pain of Mind to the more experimental sound of Souls at Zero, which would ultimately form the basis for post-metal and atmospheric sludge metal . The band released their ninth studio album Given to the Rising on May 8, 2007 through Neurot Records The band entered the studio in December 2011 to record the follow-up to Given to the Rising.

The Word as Law is a much more mature album even though there is still a long way to how they sound today. I really enjoyed their debut album for its raw and primitive hardcore but The Word as Law takes that concept and builds on it to great effect. The music is still very rooted in hardcore but as opposed to Pain of Mind there are also some very slow and heavy songs which means that The Word as Law is a much more varied album than Pain in Mind. It took three years for NEUROSIS to finally release their second album THE WORD AS LAW after a few personal changes but still with the triumvirate founders of Scott Kelly (guitar, vocals) and Dave Edwardson (bass) and Jason Roeder (drums). THE WORD AS LAW is a transition album of sort that while mostly stationed in the hardcore punk world as was their debut "Pain Of Mind," the band ramp up their experimental tendencies quite a bit.
The Word As Law still had a hardcore soul, but it also evolved the band into multifaceted artists with a propensity to go off on musical tangents with more than a little progressive influence. It was the album to first display Neurosis’ love of oppressive atmospheres, slow builds, dark tones, and crushing crescendos.
