Critical opinions of Leonard Bernstein's intensely personal readings of Gustav Mahler's symphonies have run the gamut from adulatory to dismissive, and time has not yet brought a consensus on these historic performances with the New York Philharmonic, originally released on Columbia and presented in this 2009 box set from Sony.

Mahler: The Complete Symphonies. Mahler's Fifth was one of the pieces Leonard Bernstein owned. This interpretation is broader than the one he recorded with the New York Philharmonic in the early 1960s, but it's little changed in feeling. It is, however, far more polished and a good deal more persuasive. Exclusive discount for Prime members. Sample this album Artist - Artist (Sample).

Tracklist: CD1 - Symphony no 1 in D major "Titan", Symphony no 10 in F sharp Symphony no 1 in D major "Titan" 1. Langsam. 2. Kraftig, begt, doch nicht zu schnell 3. Feierlich und gemessen, ohne zu schleppen 4. Sturmishc bewegt - Energishc 5. Symphony no 10 in F sharp minor/major: 1st movement, Adagio New York Philharmonic.

Symphony No. 10 by Gustav Mahler was written in the summer of 1910, and was his final composition. At the time of Mahler's death the composition was substantially complete in the form of a continuous draft, but not fully elaborated or orchestrated, and thus not performable. Only the first movement is regarded as reasonably complete and performable as Mahler intended.

Every fan of Gustav Mahler has a favourite recording of the symphonies. The most serious critics dismiss conductor Leonard Bernstein's mid-1960s as being too self-indulgent. But now, with Sony's new box of 12 comprehensively re-mastered CDs, it's time to listen again. After a marathon listening session over two days, I was won over by Bernstein's heart-on-sleeve emotionalism. I danced along during Symphony No. 1 and cried for the Adagio fragment of No. 10. The audio quality is generally excellent.

Sony Classical is pleased to announce another ten releases in its increasingly comprehensive series of Classical Masters. These new budget-priced releases contain classic recordings, many of them newly remastered, by some of the most celebrated musicians of the 20th century. In recent decades, the outstanding American conductor David Zinman has elevated Zurich’s venerable Tonhalle Orchestra into one of the world’s elite ensembles.
