Ludwig van Beethoven (December 16, 1770 to March 26, 1827) was a German pianist and composer widely considered to be one of the greatest of all time. His innovative compositions combined vocals and instruments, widening the scope of sonata, symphony, concerto and quartet. He is the crucial transitional figure connecting the Classical and Romantic ages of Western music. The most famous among these were the haunting Moonlight Sonata, symphonies No. 3-8, the Kreutzer violin sonata and Fidelio, his only opera. In terms of the astonishing output of superlatively complex, original and beautiful music, this period in Beethoven's life is unrivaled by any of any other composer in history.

The cast of this 1962 recording of Beethoven's Fidelio is yet to be improved upon. It would be hard to imagine a more heartrending Leonore than Christa Ludwig, a nobler Florestan than Jon Vickers, or a viler Rocco than Gottlob Frick. As fine as the cast is, the work of conductor Otto Klemperer is the real reason that this Fidelio is the Fidelio to get if you're getting only one.
