Reiner has well-deserved reputation for interpreting Richard Strauss and, while I don't believe the performance quality is always high, there are a number of performances here that are absolutely outstanding, even definitive. If you're looking for a sort of "core set" of Strauss orchestral music, this is the place to start. The other interpretation I found supbar was of the Burleske for piano and orchestra (1890), done with Byron Janis. Reiner's conducting is raucous and frayed. REINER, FRITZ The Complete Chicago Symphony Recordings on RCA 63 CD box, original jackets, will be released this autumn (September 2nd) and it will include most of this material in the latest remasterings (. Living Stereo not the earlier and inferior CD generation RCA "60+" incarnations). This Strauss set does include some of the non-CSO mono Strauss, however.

Fritz Reiner was one of the foremost conductors of his time. Crowning his long career in Europe and America was the decade from 1954 to 1963 as music director of the Chicago Symphony Orchestra an illustrious partnership that ranks along such other historical tenures as Karajan's in Berlin, Szell's in Cleveland and Bernstein's in New York. Fritz Reiner was truly ahead of his time. In these days of budget crunches and service cuts, perhaps he should be remembered not only as a great musician, but as a national hero. Strauss: Also Sprach Zarathustra (1962); Burleske, with Byron Janis, piano (1957); Der Rosenklavier: Waltzes (1957). Strauss: Sinfonia Domestica; Bourgeois Gentilhomme Suite (both 1956).
