Porgy and Bess (CL 1274) is a studio album by jazz musician Miles Davis, released in March 1959 on Columbia Records. The album features arrangements by Davis and collaborator Gil Evans from George Gershwin's 1935 opera of the same name. The album was recorded in four sessions on July 22, July 29, August 4, and August 18, 1958, at Columbia's 30th Street Studio in New York City.

There is infinitely more happening on Porgy and Bess, however, with much of the evidence existing in the subtle significance of the hauntingly lyrical passages from Danny Banks' (alto flute) solos, which commence on "Fishermen, Strawberry and Devil Crab. Or the emotive bass and tuba duet that runs throughout "Buzzard Song. The impeccable digital remastering and subsequent reissue - which likewise applies to the Miles Davis & Gil Evans: The Complete Columbia Studio Recordings box set - only magnifies the refulgence of Porgy and Bess

The second collaboration between Miles Davis and Gil Evans, Porgy and Bess, is one such distinctive recording. Davis and Evans’ recasting of the George Gershwin opera was their followup to the magnificent Miles Ahead. Many of that album’s characteristics are also present on Porgy and Bess : lush orchestrations, a wide-range of material between exuberant swingers and tender ballads, and plenty of virtuoso playing by Davis. At the time the album was recorded in the summer of 1958, the trumpeter was leading one of the greatest small-groups in jazz history, with front-line mates John Coltrane and.

LP (12" album, 33 rpm), Mono. Miles Davis Gil Evans Format: Vinyl. It translates the brilliantly flawed "Porgy and Bess" into the vernacular of the excessive melodious tone of the early sixties. The genius of Miles Davis' playing here is his capacity to re-interpret both the music and intention of the original pieces into a beautiful dialog that is both reminiscent Gershwin's initial inspiration and voice it as a dialog of desires and inhabitations. If you're a Miles fan, or a Gil Evans fan, you have it already. If you're a Gershwin fan, the situation is a little muddier as it's nothing like the original, but still may be a good introduction to what happens whan hardcore jazz musicians take on something from outside their immediate world, & do it well.
