Otis Verries Hicks, known as Lightnin' Slim (March 13, 1913 – July 27, 1974), was an African-American Louisiana blues musician, who recorded for Excello Records and played in a style similar to its other Louisiana artists. The blues critic ED Denson ranked him as one of the five great bluesmen of the 1950s, along with Muddy Waters, Little Walter, Howlin' Wolf and Sonny Boy Williamson.

High & Low Down/Over Easy Lightnin' Slim. Smith's album is far more rootsy, a Louisiana blues affair, with only minor intrusions from the horns. Slim and Smith toured together frequently in their final years and these two 'contemporary' albums fit together as well as the two artists did on stage.

The Best Of Lightnin' Slim. These early sides feature Slim's rasping vocals and dirty playing but the real draw is the weird echo that seems to shimmer off of everything, down to the bass drum and cymbals. The effect is nothing short of psychedelic, sounding like a cross between the earliest Howlin' Wolf creep-fests and John Lee Hooker's tripped-out "Walkin' the Boogie" on House of the Blues. The Best Of Lightnin' Slim.
