Girl (stylized as G I R L) is the second studio album by American singer and record producer Pharrell Williams. The album was released on March 3, 2014, by Columbia Records and Williams' label I Am Other. Girl was Williams' first studio album since his 2006 debut, In My Mind. It contains appearances by Justin Timberlake, Miley Cyrus, Daft Punk, JoJo, and Alicia Keys.
Another reason the album debuted at No. 2 on the Billboard 200 and topped the R&B/Hip-Hop Albums chart: "Happy," the monster single that first surfaced on 2013's Despicable Me 2 soundtrack and further primed the public for more Pharrell. It's an irresistible track that earned him an Oscar nomination and shot to No. 1 on the Hot 100, establishing this longtime producer and frequent collaborator as a solo superstar in his own right
2013 was the year of Pharrell. Sure, he’s been lacing the pop charts for more than a decade, composing beats and singing hooks for everyone from Snoop Dogg and Jay Z to Justin Timberlake and Britney Spears. But last year, he finally capped his transition to center-stage stardom with Daft Punk‘s Get Lucky and Robin Thicke’s Blurred Lines – two megasmashes driven to ubiquity by Pharrell’s lighthearted cockiness and free-range funkiness. Compared to them, Pharrell’s records are like the big, goofy-ass hat he wore to the Grammys and the Oscars. Despite being ludicrously consistent in supporting roles, he’s never had much success as a leading man: . the early-’00s rap-rock band he led with fellow Neptune Chad Hugo, and his no-fun 2006 solo album, In My Mind, are mostly best forgotten. That bad luck ends with Pharrell’s second solo disc.

The album is loaded with luscious orchestration, motivational mantras and playful sex metaphors. Its taught 10 tracks bring to mind the record Justin Timberlake could have made last year, if he had dared to leave anything on the cutting room floor. Unfortunately, G I R L only measures up as a mediocre pop record. So let's just sit back and wait a few months before the radio gets a hold of all these songs and overplays them to death.
Just prior to the March 2014 release of G I R L, "Happy," one of several songs he granted to the soundtrack of Despicable Me 2, topped the Hot 100. That carefree soul throwback appears here, almost smack in the middle. It doesn't sound out of place in a set of upbeat, candy-coated pop-R&B that is relatively modern-sounding, laced with some elements of R&B from the mid- to late '60s and that sweet late-'70s to early-'80s spot.
