Joseph Rudolph "Philly Joe" Jones (July 15, 1923 – August 30, 1985) was an American jazz drummer, known as the drummer for the first "Great" Miles Davis Quintet. He should not be confused with "Papa" Jo Jones, another drummer who had a long tenure with Count Basie. The two men died only a few days apart. As a child, Jones appeared as a featured tap dancer on The Kiddie Show on the Philadelphia radio Station WIP. He was in the US Army during World War II.

Drummer Philly Joe Jones led a few sets for Galaxy during the 1977-78 period that featured veteran hard bop-oriented players. For this LP (not yet reissued on CD), Jones is matched with trumpeter Blue Mitchell, trombonist Slide Hampton, the tenors of Charles Bowen (who plays one song on soprano) and Harold Land, pianist Cedar Walton and bassist Marc Johnson. Philly Joe Jones was born with the name Joseph Rudolph Jones in the city of Philadelphia on July 15, 1923. His mother, a piano teacher taught him the basics in music. He established himself as "Philly Joe" Jones, from the name of the city of his birth, to distinguish himself from the mainstay Count Basie’s drummer, Jo Jones.
