Hibernaculum built on and expanded upon the new musical template Earth unveiled in Hex by reinstating the massive low end drones into their sound and showcasing a more straight forward and conventionally melodic riffing style.

Arriving in 2007, Hibernaculum, a beautifully packaged a double audio/video disc combination issued on Southern Lord, proves that the change in sound that Earth mastermind and guitarist Dylan Carlson and drummer Adrienne Davies created on Hex: Or Printing in the Infernal Method was no one-off.

Hibernaculum Information. Track listing (Songs). 1. Ouroboros Is Broken (8:17). Extra-Capsular Extraction.

Hibernaculum is Earth's first release since then, but it's not a follow-up as much as a history lesson told through the prism of Hex. It includes a four-track CD with three old Earth tunes redone in the Hex style, and a DVD documenting the band's post-Hex European tour. Musically, it might not quite match its predecessor, but as an updated retelling of the Earth tale, Hibernaculum is fascinating. Track two takes on "Coda Maestoso in F (Flat) Minor", a catchy rocker from Earth's 1996 "pop" album Pentastar: In the Style of Demons. Slowed to a glacial pace, the song becomes a desert mirage, turning each corner a few steps later than expected.

Hibernaculum (album). Hibernaculum is a studio album by the American musical group Earth, though acknowledged as an EP by the band. All of the songs, except for "A Plague of Angels", are older Earth songs that were re-recorded in the country-influenced style of Hex. The album includes a DVD with a documentary by Seldon Hunt, called "Within the Drone". Both "Coda Maestoso in F (Flat) Minor" and a "A Plague of Angels" appear in the documentary, "The Wild and Wonderful Whites of West Virginia".

Hibernaculum built on and expanded upon the new musical template Earth unveiled in Hex by reinstating the massive low end drones into their sound and showcasing a more straight forward and conventionally melodic riffing style. The effect is similar to standing inside a massive bell as it's being rung; if played in a decently sized sound sytem, the bass frequencies will rattle your bowels while the expertly captured layers of golden guitar tones, vintage keyboards, horns, strings etc slowly and majestically unfurl themselves like some sort of psychedelic western reel.

Sound transformation occurred through Hex, induced Earth to rearrange some old songs with the new style: a sort of acid and dilated blues/post rock to be played live. Transferring on disc the rearrangements, the result is not as lysergic as Hex music is, but it’s more melancholic and doom. If Hex is the soundtrack of a western duel, with deep looking, suspended time, and slow surreal movements while wind blows away the dust, Hibernaculum is the movie ending, when the winner of the duel crosses a cemetery on horseback, and the sunset lights the tombs. Earth are capable to shape the pure vibration from the distorted impenetrable wall of sound of the past to the wide and extensive panorama of the present. Earth music has now an infinite depth of field, like an intense and emotive photo of American wilderness.
