The Rats didn't have an original bone in their body, but nonetheless this is enjoyable period British R&B/rock fare. Of the mid-sixties cuts, their version of "Spoonful" is pretty lean and mean, and the "House of the Rising Sun"-derived "New Orleans" is nicely moody. Tacked onto the end are two numbers by a reconstituted Rats at a 1994 memorial concert for Ronson, as well as three horrendous hard rock studio tracks from 1998. It's certainly a release that only appeals to the hardcore fanatic.

Of Bernie Gripplestone. Benny Marshall was The Rats’ lead singer and a close friend of Ronson. Mick was the best guitarist in Hull, so when he left to head down south and join Bowie, I was pretty upset, he says. John Cambridge, our drummer, had played with Bowie on Space Oddity. Cambridge did as instructed and the pair were introduced at the Marquee club, where Bowie was playing on February 3, 1970. Two days later Ronson had learned the riffs and song structures well enough to back Bowie, Cambridge and Tony Visconti for a John Peel Radio 1 show live in concert at the Paris Theatre in Lower Regent Street in London. They did 15 songs, including a new number, Width Of A Circle, and plenty of material from Bowie’s recently released self-titled second album. Reaction was positive. This was better than Bowie’s regular gig at the Three Tuns pub in Beckenham.

THE RATS album First Long Player Record was a collection of Kubinec songs recorded by producer Adrian Millar with musicians brought in for the job (aka their own band CWT, also with an album on Kuckuck). of which THE RATS was one. (Millar's next move after THE RATS was to put together another group of musicians to form "THE BABYS")
