Hill recorded most of the album at Bob Marley’s Tuff Gong studios in Kingston, Jamaica. At the time, she was romantically involved with Rohan Marley, Bob’s son, and later became pregnant with his child. The album’s lyrics touch on her pregnancy as well as the tensions within the Fugees. The neo-soul record modernized gospel music in the eye of the public, and the candor of its reflection of Hill’s reality and the perspective of a black woman was unprecedented. Sadly her first studio release would also be her last.

At her best Lauryn Hill flirts with legitimate prophet status, digging to her deepest to harness the power greater than herself; a power we all need to survive and overcome. She offers it to us. I’m out here, she seems to say; you can be out here, too. Even though this is when Ms. Hill is technically at her best, these songs don’t comprise the highlights of the album. The heart of Miseducation is too vast, too imperative to find its complete representation in a series of slick punchlines
American singer and rapper Lauryn Hill has released one studio album, one live album, and eighteen singles (including seven singles as a featured artist). She has also written for and performed on several other tracks that are lesser-known
Lauryn Hill: write songs that lyrically move me and have the integrity of reggae and the knock of hip-hop and the instrumentation of classic soul. a sound that’s raw. I like the rawness of you being able to hear the scratch in the vocals. Candice Anderson: Backup singer, The Miseducation of Lauryn Hill album and tour. Ras Baraka: New Jersey poet, politician and teacher who served as Miseducation’s narrator; Baraka speaks to a group of children about love during interludes throughout the album. Che Vicous (formerly Che Guevera): Producer who worked on The Miseducation of Lauryn Hill. D’Angelo: Featured on Miseducation duet Nothing Even Matters. Lauryn Hill: iter/producer.

Hill’s first solo album provided a sharp counterpoint by injecting the perspective of a young black woman dealing with identity and sexuality. The response to it was on was a juggernaut, earning five Grammy Awards including Album of the Year. She put her Fugees past behind her, seizing the spotlight to showcase her rapping skills and amplify her emotional singing voice. To understand the significance of The Miseducation of Lauryn Hill, it’s important to remember what mainstream hip-hop was like in 1998. Materialism and misogyny were rampant, fanned by music videos that presented women as objects or conquests. Hill’s first solo album provided a sharp counterpoint by injecting the perspective of a young black woman dealing with identity and sexuality.
