Complete your The Sonics collection. Maintaining My Cool" actually contains most of The Sonics' lone album for Jerden records, "Introducing The Sonics" minus a couple of cuts that Jerden later put out on their "Fire & Ice: Lost Tapes" collection. Actually, it's not bad, decent mid 60's garage rock, but by the time they recorded for Jerden, The Sonics had lost some of the manic punk rawness that makes their Etiquette Records recordings so essential.

I would be interested to know if this is printed from a digital source since it is a remaster?

This pressing is one of the worst sounding records that I own. Tons of surface noise and loud pops and crackling in many places despite cleaning it two times. Great music, but terrible sounding release.

Is this a reissue of the mono or stereo mix?

This collection is an excellent introduction to the Sonics. Had they been handled right, they could have been a top band in their day. Gerrie Roslie seems to be a big part of the talent behind their sound. It's frat rock, it's party rock, it's punk before punk. Most of the Roslie compositions are semi-classics. 'The Witch', 'You Got Your Head On Backwards' (the lyric here would really annoy militant feminists). 'Dirty Old Man' takes a straight look at your typical leering lecher. Their covers of 'Diddy Wah Diddy' and 'I'm a Man' are fine, But the neurotic edge to Roslie's songs are more interesting, reminiscent of John Entwistle's always strange subject material for tunes. 'Boris the Spider' is one of my favorite Who songs, along with 'My Wife'.I've listened to a lot of this band's material. The only track I found painful to listen to was a very tepid version of the Lenny Welch classic 'Since I Fell For You'. I don't think white boys can touch the excellence of Welch's performance. And they do a spirited version of 'Leave My Kitten Alone', but I do prefer that angry rock vocal John Lennon gives to the Beatles' take of the song.

This may be the "Sonic's" best album. Almost every track is blistering, hard-edged, punk n' roll. You wish the "Yardbirds" did it this way. I rate this record an 11 out of 10 because if this were "Spinal Tap" it WOULD go to 11. If it wasn't for the cheesy yet charming "Love Lights" this would be a perfect masterpiece. Still, for what its supposed to be "Love Lights" is kind of catchy. This record slays psychedelic posers with mighty, rock & roll guitars.
