Under Milk Wood (5:55). Overview (current section). The Stan Tracey Quartet. The Barley Mow. Graham Collier. Where Fortune Smiles. Michael Garrick Septet.

Under Milk Wood is one of my favourite records, recommended by my brother Bernard of Yate the jazz freak. Recorded in 1965, it's a series of sketches inspired by the Dylan Thomas radio play, and it has a weird overall coherence that mixes playful spontaneity and lyrical beauty. The quartet is really excellent, with the lovely tone of Bobby Wellins' tenor sax finding a little more edge than his more mellow recordings. Album with Philip Madoc as the Narrator is a real treat. I saw him perform it live at Brecon Jazz with Stan Tracey et al. Just a shame some sellers use this cover but actually the version that is delivered is without the narration.

Welsh poet Dylan Thomas' masterpiece formed Tracey's inspiration for this revisit of his classic original recording of Milkwood from 1966 --itself regarded as a masterpiece in it's own right. This 1976 version contains narration over the music.
