My Old Kentucky Home" was recorded many times during the early era of cylinder recordings. The Cylinder Audio Archive at the University of California (Santa Barbara) Library contains 19 commercial recordings of the song (in addition to several home recordings). Since Newman's recording, the adaptation was covered several times more. The only version that charted was by Johnny Cash, who released it as a single from his John R. Cash album (1975, Columbia KC 33370). The single reached No. 42 on Billboard's country-music chart. Note that the various cover versions generally use slightly different titles, some adding "My" to Newman's title, others omitting "Old".

Hard Times Comin' Lyrics: Let us pause in life's pleasures and count its many tears, While we all sup sorrow with the poor, There's a song that will linger forever in our ears, Oh, hard times, come again. It’s the song, the sign of the weary Hard times, hard times, come again no more Many days you have lingered all around my cabin door Oh hard times, come again no more. While we seek mirth and beauty and music light and gay There are frail forms fainting at the door Though their voices are silent, their pleading looks will say Oh, hard times, come again no more. Johnny Cash, whose gravelly bass-baritone was the vocal bedrock of American country music for more than four decades, died yesterday in Nashville. He was 71 and lived nearby in Hendersonville, Tenn. Mr. Cash exerted an incalculable influence on music. As Rich Kienzle observed in Country Music magazine, he ''strengthened the bonds between folk and country music so that both sides saw their similarities as well as their differences. 'He helped to liberalize Nashville,'' Mr. Kienzle wrote, ''so that it could accept the unconventional and the controversial, and he did as much as anyone to make the 'outlaw' phenomenon possible.
