Schubert, Jeffrey Tate, Staatskapelle Dresden. Schubert, Jeffrey Tate, Staatskapelle Dresden - Symphony C-dur D 944 "Die Große" ‎(CD, Album). 7 29 177. Franz Schubert, Jeffrey Tate.

The Symphony No. 9 in C major, D 944, known as the Great (first published by Breitkopf & Härtel in 1849 as "Symphonie, C Dur, für großes Orchester", listed as Symphony No. 8 in the Neue Schubert-Ausgabe), is the final symphony completed by Franz Schubert. Originally called The Great C major to distinguish it from his Symphony No. 6, the Little C major, the subtitle is now usually taken as a reference to the symphony's majesty

Schubert Symphony No. 9 ("The Great") - Tate. The untimely passing of Sir Jeffrey Tate threw a wrench on my programming plan for this month. Stay tuned! It’s unfortunate that we too often pigeon-hole artists (and especially conductors) as specialists of a particular portion of the repertoire.

The sprawling expanse of the Ninth resists originality from conductors, and beyond Furtwangler and (if you love him at all) Toscanini, the historical record isn't deeply impressive.

Schubert’s last completed symphony, his 9th known as the ‘Great C major‘, was completed in 1825-6 and represented the end of a long struggle to produce a ‘great symphony’ – two unfinished works are its direct predecessors, the 7th in E major (1821) and the famous 8th ‘Unfinished ‘(1822), both works on an expansive scale. The 9th is remarkable for the rhythmic drive of tiny filigree motifs that multiply and climax, and as Schumann said, its ‘heavenly length’. It was in 1839 Schumann came across the forgotten score in the possession of Schubert’s brother Ferdinand.

Schubert’s Symphony No. 9 in C major (originally numbered the 7th, causing a great deal of confusion in the Music Library) was written in 1828, the year of Schubert’s death. Sometimes considered his greatest work, the 9th Symphony was never heard by the composer, because the Viennese musicians considered it unplayable; rather, it was premiered in a Leipzig Gewandhaus concert in 1839 under the direction of Felix Mendelssohn. Schubert's Symphony No. 9 begins with a noble, reflective theme that reappears throughout the first movement.
