Bruce Frederick Joseph Springsteen (born September 23, 1949), nicknamed "The Boss", is an American singer-songwriter who is a solo artist and is the leader of the E Street Band. Springsteen received critical acclaim for his early 1970s albums and attained worldwide fame upon the release of Born to Run in 1975. During a career that has spanned five decades, Springsteen has become known for his poetic and socially conscious lyrics and for his lengthy, energetic stage performances.

Beginning in January of 2016, Bruce Springsteen embarked on a career retrospective. It will probably end this year, 2018, meaning he has been summing up for three full years. Now if any artist can defy the odds of age and inspiration, it would be Bruce Springsteen. That means a full band or big statement album might not happen until his 75th birthday. Will he then be able to mount a high energy world tour at that point in his life? Again, if anybody could.

In 1980 he released a double album, The River, that rather than being bloated and overblown was a collection of sharply written and fervently performed pop songs that heightened his mainstream profile. Surely, then, he would keep that momentum, release another rock album? Not exactly - he put out the dark, primarily acoustic Nebraska instead in 1982. When you’re dealing with a retrospective like this for an artist like Bruce Springsteen, it’s hard to find your entry point, to figure out who you’re writing for. It’s harder still when confronted with a recording career spanning four decades that has more twists and turns than are readily apparent. There have been two narratives in Springsteen’s career that have long interested me. The first is the perpetual pull between romanticism and realism within his career, his shifts between mythologizing and reporting.

The album is a career retrospective consisting of 18 tracks. It spans almost half a century of Springsteen's career, from as early as 1966. According to the press release, Springsteen selected the songs to reflect the themes and sections of the autobiography. The first five tracks have not been previously released. Variety caught Springsteen at an unusually retrospective point in his career. On stage, he’s spent the past couple of years reflecting on a roughly 35-year-old album; and in his compelling 2016 autobiography Born to Run, which will frame the songs and stories during his Broadway dates, he’s examined his entire life. So goes one of the pivotal lines of Atlantic City, the only single, and the watershed moment of Bruce Springsteen’s 1982 album Nebraska. On almost every Springsteen compilation, Atlantic City is the black sheep, standing alone in a catalog filled with horn-filled rave-ups of rebellion and romance, and simple, stout rockers detailing the darker sides of the American dreeam. Nebraska as a whole is an extreme outlier in his discography.

Bruce Springsteen went through a period of tremendous self-doubt before he recorded The Rising. The 1999/2000 reunion tour with the E Street Band was a huge success, they were just playing old material. Bruce Springsteen knew that it was virtually impossible to top Born in the USA with a bigger album, so he didn't even try. Instead, he took a couple years off and returned with an intensely personal album about a failing relationship. On the opening track, "Ain't Got You," he seemed to be singing about himself, with lines like "All the little girls want to tear me apart/ When I walk down the street people stop and stare/ Well you'd think I might be thrilled, but baby I don't care.
