Whenever I listen to a Wilco album I never feel like I'm enjoying it. But as it starts to wind down I always feel sad, and a few days later I'll feel the need to come back to it. Great band, you never know what you're going to get with them. If you've never hear their work with Billy Bragg covering Woody Guthrie songs (Mermaid Ave I and II), go do yourself a favour. Wilco's seventh album, the breezy and laid-back Wilco (The Album), was released on June 30, 2009, one month after the death of former bandmember Jay Bennett, who passed away in his home in Urbana, Illinois after accidentally overdosing on the prescription painkiller fentanyl. At the end of touring that album, the band took a break for much of 2010 (their longest break since formation) and resurfaced in 2011 with their own label, dBpm Records, and the release of The Whole Love.
Wilco (the album) resets the sextet back to pre-Foxtrot pop while furthering Americana avant-gardist Jeff Tweedy's Radiohead-like melodic sophistication. What it lacks in identity, perhaps a statement of purpose locked down by a title, the tightly produced, musically pointed Wilco compensates for in near-total coalescence. Its hope, vulnerability, and fears converse as one Tweedy. Fortunately, sweetly simple midpoint "You and I" brings the whole endeavor into hard focus, particularly as the Summerteeth Beatles-esque of "You Never Know" and its "Glass Onion" start-up combined with George Harrison "My Sweet Lord" guitar swoop buttresses it. Soft acoustic jiggle and gauzy slide on "Solitaire" caps both with an intimate acknowledgement that "I was wrong to believe in me only.
But the album announcement raised a bigger question: why is Tweedy, who has never done a proper solo album, doing one now, rather than releasing the songs with Wilco? In an interview this month with Rolling Stone, Tweedy revealed that Wilco are on extended break for a very reasonable, nondramatic reason: ’s wife, Miiri, got a Fulbright scholarship. So they spent the better part of the last year in Helsinki, so she could do her studies and her teaching. Wilco Announce Fall North American Tour.
