Released earlier this month, Hard Times/Type-A develops the CYN Music boss’s never-ending slew of slammers. Repping two wholly different sides of his spectrum in its wake. With its bulbous rolling bassline and soulful vocal sample, lead track Hard Times is an instant rewind to the mid 00s, a time when he first started cutting his teeth as a producer. Not just for Cyantific, but for D&B at large. There’s an argument to say it could even be seen as a golden age. If you stick with the genre then you see that there are very few periods which aren’t a golden age for D&B. In my position I’ve seen all those ages, and they’re all golden. For me the first golden age was 97/98, he recalls. Ed Rush & Optical and that type of stuff. The whole concept of an album and listening to an album by an artist I rate from start to finish still really enthralls me. I really hope albums don’t fall by the wayside in the modern digital age.
Follow Cyantific to never miss another show. A guest mix I did for the Drum & Bass show on BBC Radio 1, hosted by Friction. The mix aired on 16/03/14 to promote my new single 'Hard Times'/'Type A' on CYN Music.
Hard Times", "Type A" (2014). Ice Cream (Vanilla Mix)" (2014). Colour in the Shadows" (feat. Cyantific is the stage name of Jon Stanley, an electronic producer/DJ from London, England. Cyantific was originally a duo, consisting of Stanley and Matt Whitehead, but the duo split in 2009. The pair met at high school, where Matt was in a heavy metal band, and Jon collecting Drum and Bass records. They began making music using simple sequencing software on an old PC.

Hard Times, Type A is Jon’s seventh release of his own since kick starting the label in back in 2010. I was listening to a lot of old Commix and Logistics and wanted to capture that mid 2000’s Hospital sound. he says of Hard Times. I really feel there’s not a lot of that stuff around anymore. You’ve either got, and I hate the term, ‘liquidy’ liquid or you’ve got upfront dance floor stuff but there’s not really anything in between. Referencing a sound that’s still largely contemporary is an interesting tactic. Jon also informs there’s me an album is in progress too. Having last released a long player back when Cyantific were a duo (2006’s Ghetto Blaster on Hospital Records) he feels like now is the time to focus some of his efforts into album territory. I wrote a few ideas last year but wasn’t happy with the direction it was going in. My missus is really into underground D&B so I’ve sort of moved it a little more that way.
