Philip Glass, who recently celebrated his 80th birthday, chooses a sweeping simplicity and proves the age-old statement that less is more. His score for the film The Illusionist was widely acclaimed upon its release in 2006. The music for the film evokes the feeling of mystery and wonder that surrounds the famous magician Eisenheim and it is performed brilliantly by the Czech Film Orchestra under the baton of Michael Riesman.

The Illusionist (From the Philip Glass Recording Archive, Vol. VII), 2006. The Illusionist, 02:24.

With its sweeping simplicity, the film score for The Illusionist by composer Philip Glass again proves the age-old adage that less is more. The movie, set in Victorian Vienna, tells the tale of a mesmerizing magician who uses sorcery to help him transcend the boundaries of the aristocratic world, all so that he can embark upon a high-class romance. The story, based on a novel by Steven Millhauser, contains an inherent mysticism and spirituality perfectly molded to Glass' distinctive style

The following is a list of compositions by Philip Glass. How Now for ensemble (also for piano, 1968). Music in Fifths (1969). Music in Similar Motion (1969). Music with Changing Parts (1970, recorded 1973). Music in Twelve Parts (1971–1974). Another Look at Harmony, Parts I and II (1975). Dance (Dance 1, 3 and 5, 1979, with Lucinda Childs and Sol LeWitt). A Descent Into the Maelstrom (based on the short story by Edgar Allan Poe, 1986).

THE ILLUSIONIST – Philip Glass. I make no secret of the fact that, for the most part, I’m not a huge fan of Philip Glass’s music. Over the years, scores such as Kundun, The Hours, and his ‘qatsi’ trilogy, which were all acclaimed by the mainstream music media, have generally left me cold and un-moved. At its core, The Illusionist has all the trademarks of a classic Glass work – Mishima, or Kundun, or Koyaanisqatsi. Many of the middle-album cues, from Meeting in the Carriage through to Frankel Appears tend to coagulate together in a relentlessly undulating, monotone mush which threatens to undermine the strength of other parts of the album, and certainly makes waiting for the admittedly rather good finale something of a slog.

The Illusionist soundtrack from 2006, composed by Philip Glass. Released by Rykodisc in 2006 containing music from The Illusionist (2006). Glass has tempered his trademark ostinatos and orchestral sound for this film. Instead, he is much more interested in lyrical flights of fantasy and setting individual instruments against a backwash of sound. In The Hours, his most recent high-profile work, Glass created a chamber sound using piano and a few strings. For The Illusionist, he appropriately pulled out all the stops for a lush, 19th century Viennese orchestra
