Artistic Director and conductor Rebecca Petra Naomi Seeman says they’ll be singing the work by Benjamin Britten that gave the ensemble its name, as well as a commissioned piece for the occasion by Swedish composer Karin Rehnqvist. I think the choir did it last in the ’70s sometime, or possibly in the early ’80s, but it’s also a piece that we’ve been working on for many months, and it’s been very exciting and thrilling to see the choir reach the heights that are required for this work. It’s a piece specially written for the concert, called Songs from the North. It’s a four-movement setting of mostly Inuit poems, she says. Two poems from the arctic circle of Greenland, and one poem from the Arctic Circle region of Northern Canada, Pelly Bay.

Sacred Gifts, Profane Pleasures, Marcy Norton's excellent new book, is proof that, in the right hands, even a seemingly narrow study can provide significant insight. Her history of tobacco and chocolate tells us much about those commodities and the broader intersection of culture, consumption and statecraft. ―James Robertson, The Times of London. Rarely does religious history figure as prominently in a study of commodity culture as it does in Marcy Norton's Sacred Gifts, Profane Pleasures.

Sacred and Profane Songs of Corsica.

William Cornysh is probably two people, possibly father and son, who left a rich, often passion-laden body of work. Harry Christophers brings it magnificently to life alongside unaccompanied choral works written by Benjamin Britten throughout his career. Cornysh’s Woefully Array’d is particularly beautifully shaped and Britten’s Sacred and Profane strongly projected. The juxtaposition of these two very different musical voices is wonderfully revealing and satisfying. Sacred and Profane The Sixteen.
