The "Missa in honorem Sancti Dominici" is an excellent introduction to his curious style: sensitivity to nuances of Latin text; boldly crafted sonorities; harmonies that shift to and fro in a departure from nearly all the rules of tonal composition, bringing a flavour of mysticism to the effect of the music. The "Kyrie" and "Agnus Dei" are particular examples of this; the "Gloria" and "Credo" are somewhat more clearly cut but no less heady. It is with the "Nine Tenebrae Motets" that Rubbra's true depth is revealed. The "Magnificat and Nunc Dimittis in A flat" is a remarkable setting; a very personal response to words that have been set countless times by composers well-known and otherwise.

St John's College Choir, Cambridge. Magnificat and Nunc Dimittis. Charles) Edmund Rubbra Composer. Christopher Robinson (org). With this valuable new Rubbra anthology Christopher Robinson and his St John’s College Choir reinforces more than maintains the favourable impression left by previous instalments in their English Choral Music series for Naxos. In the glorious Missa in honorem Sancti Dominici from 1949 (inspired by Rubbra’s own conversion to Roman Catholicism the previous year, on the feast day of St Dominic) our Cambridge group doesn’t quite match the sumptuous blend, miraculous unanimity or spine-tingling fervour displayed by James O’Donnell’s Westminster Cathedral Choir (to quote the composer: . his is not austere music: it may seem emaciated in its printed appearance, but red blood runs through its veins!’).

Rubbra: Nine Tenebrae Motets, Magnificat and Nunc Dimittis, 1m 41sec. Missa in honorem Sancti Dominici, Op. 66, "St. Dominic Mass", Kyrie. Chat About Missa in honorem Sancti Dominici, Op. Dominic Mass", Kyrie by Christopher Robinson.

Before Rubbra's last term at the Royal College, he was unexpectedly invited to play the piano for the Arts League of Service Travelling Theatre on a six-week tour of Yorkshire, since their usual pianist had been taken ill. He accepted this offer despite its meaning he missed his last term. This provided him with invaluable experience in playing and composing theatre music, that he never regretted and which stood him in good stead for his later dramatic work. Magnificat and Nunc dimittis in A flat, Op. 65 for chorus and organ. 66 (Rubbra’s first Roman Catholic mass and the result of his conversion). Three Motets, Op. 76 for unaccompanied SATB choir. Nine Tenebrae Motets, Op. 72 (a, b and c, three sets of three written over a period of time).
