Eric Clapton is the debut solo studio album by British rock musician Eric Clapton, released in August 1970 under Atco and Polydor Records. After being successful with bands including The Yardbirds, John Mayall & the Bluesbreakers, Cream and Blind Faith, Clapton recorded an album under his own name in late 1969 and early 1970. The album cover shows Clapton sitting in a room which is going to be decorated and in which a ladder, a chair and some carpets are placed.

British guitarist and singer-songwriter Eric Clapton has released 24 studio albums, 26 singles, 18 compilations, 14 live albums and six soundtrack albums as a solo artist and scores of collaborations on records with other artists. Before his career as a solo artist, Clapton became famous as a guitarist in several bands, including The Yardbirds (1963–65), John Mayall & the Bluesbreakers (1965–66), Cream (1966–68), Blind Faith (1968–69) and Derek and the Dominos (1970–71).
A concept album, its theme revolved around Clapton’s unrequited love for George Harrison’s wife, Patti. The band would drift apart following an American tour and a failed attempt at recording a second album. Hit hard by the break up of The Dominos, the commercial failure of the Layla album and his unrequited love, Eric sunk into three years of heroin addiction. Although he rarely emerged from his Surrey Estate, he filled box upon box with tapes of songs. An unflinching documentary about his life, Eric Clapton: Life In 12 Bars premiered at the Toronto Film Festival in September 2017. Eric married Melia McEnery on January 1, 2002.
