Northern Lights – Southern Cross is the sixth studio album by Canadian-American rock group the Band, released in 1975. It was the first album to be recorded at their new California studio, Shangri-La, and the first album of all new material since 1971's Cahoots.

Northern Lights-Southern Cross totals eight songs in all, and he and the rest of the group rose to the occasion, luxuriating in the range afforded by the studio (christened Shangri-La, a reference to the idyllic haven for art and civilization in James Hilton's novel Lost Horizon - the vibes were that good).

Northern Lights - Southern Cross is The Band's shortest album, and it's always over too soon. This one definitely ranks pretty high up there for me as one of their top albums-worlds better than Cahoots and with moments that transcend a lot of their other material. It's such a pity they had to quit making music when their last album was this great. Postscript: I picked up the 2008 Japanese release of "Northern Lights Southern Cross," and it's better than the 2001 remaster, but even with more neutral mastering it's not the most transparent recording. It's easier on the ears, but there isn't much more detail. Still, I think it's worth it to avoid the 2001 remaster.

For more about this song, see Peter Viney's article. A shepherd on a hillside, while over my flock I bide Oh a cold winter night a band of angels sing In a dream I heard a voice saying "fear not, come rejoice It's the end of the beginning, praise the new born king" CHORUS. I saw it with my own eyes, written up in the skies But why a simple herdsmen such as I And then it came to pass, he was born at last Right below the star that shines on high CHORUS

The first few seconds of Northern Lights - Southern Cross promise a departure. Before long it’s equally evident that the Band’s new sound is the result of a revolution in instrumental and recording technology and not of a revolution in ideas. Rags and Bones, which ends the album, consists of an obsessive catalog of urban sights and sounds with only a passing evocation of déjà vu to indicate what they mean to Robertson or are supposed to mean to the listener. In Jupiter Hollow, an apparent dream journey into states of mental dissociation, Robertson notes matter-of-factly, without seeming to complain, that nobody cares when a man goes mad/And tries to free the ghost within.

Info for Northern Lights – Southern Cross. The Band’s Northern Lights-Southern Cross is, in nearly every respect, the group’s studio swan song. The group’s fifth album is also one of its finest works, a finely textured collection that at the time of its 1975 release marked the quintet’s first album of new material in four years. And what songs they are. Anchored by the standards Acadian Driftwood, Ophelia, and It Makes No Difference, the set finds the collective in peak form
