Josephine Ejiroghene Oniyama (born 1983 in Manchester) is an English singer-songwriter. She has released one album and a number of singles. Living in the Manchester suburb of Hulme, Oniyama grew up in a colourful West African culture combined with the large musical heritage of Manchester, which shaped her style. She was playing gigs by the age of 15. During her college years she was further influenced by Sister Rosetta Tharpe, Bob Dylan, Joni Mitchell, and Bob Marley.
Josephine is Magnolia Electric C. s third and final studio album, and the first after Fading Trails in 2006. For the album, the band teamed up once again with engineer Steve Albini at his Electrical Audio Studios in Chicago. The record was conceived as a tribute to late Magnolia Electric Co. bass guitarist Evan Farrell. The album took two weeks to write and record. Secretly Canadian press release. THE SUNDAY MIRROR - "Portrait is so sophisticated Josephine could follow in the footsteps of Amy Winehouse or Adele" - 4/5. BBC ONLINE. an album both novel and nostalgic, yet with an identity entirely of its own".
Josephine's "Portrait" album is the best album of new music I've heard in the last 10 years (I said that about Camilla Kerslake's first album a few years ago, but this is even better than than), and the more I listen to it, the more I like it. So many influences in there but all delivered in Josephine's fresh, imaginative, unique style. And what an incredible voice. My favourite track? Only by a whisker I'd say "Last Minute".
One such example is the debut album for 29-year-old Manchester native Josephine Oniyama – or, for recording purposes, just plain Josephine. She manages the rare feat of creating something both novel and nostalgic, yet with an identity entirely its own. A mere couple of bars into Portrait, and a pretty clear statement is delivered: the voice is very much the leader here, and everything else follows obediently. Vocally, Josephine is old beyond her years, possessing a rich, classical tone normally reserved for ancient, crackling vinyl.
