Released June 9, 2003. Hail to the Thief Tracklist. About Hail to the Thief. The title of the record has different points of reference. While the phrase was used by anti-Bush protesters following the controversial 2000 presidential election, lead singer Thom Yorke stated it was in reference to the 1824 election, which was won by John Quincy Adams.
Hail to the Thief is the sixth studio album by the English rock band Radiohead. It was the last album released under Radiohead's record contract with EMI. After transitioning to a more electronic style on their albums Kid A and Amnesiac, recorded through protracted studio experimentation, Radiohead sought to combine electronic and rock music.
Recently, however, Radiohead have been turning on the charm and talking up their seventh album, Hail to the Thief, as "OK Computer 2". The video for single There There is currently being broadcast on a Jumbotron screen in Times Square. Aeroplanes flew over last month's Californian Coachella festival trailing Hail to the Thief banners. Last week, Radiohead submitted to a ribbing on Jonathan Ross's TV show. By their standards it's a promotinal blitzkreig.
Hail To the Thief (also known as Hail to the Thief, (or, The Gloaming. in its liner notes) is the sixth studio album by English rock band Radiohead.
The record Radiohead did make, Hail to the Thief, is almost an anti-masterpiece, a well-sequenced collection of songs that finds them internalizing the blend of experimental electronics and straightforward rock they wore so far out on their sleeves just a few years earlier. They basically started over, and on the record, the band sounds aware that it's peaked in a way, and perhaps less sure of where it wants to go. I hear the tension between a band that started to make the back-to-basics album guitarist Ed O'Brien so frequently mentions in interviews and a band that self-consciously. Hail to the Thief isn't Radiohead's best album, but it doesn't need to be, either. There are other albums for that. It did, however, prove that there can be life for a band after its landmark statement, and that life sounds pretty damn good.
