Digital Booklet: Bartok: Violin Concertos Nos. 1 & 2 - Viola Concerto. The rest of this cd of Bartok's two Violin Concerti and the posthumous Viola Concerto is on an very high level of execution and recording. The engineering is splendidly clear yet soft-edged and intimate. There is no want of spikiness where it is called for, and it often is in Bartok, and the technical challenges of the solo and orchestral parts are met with seeming effortlessness.

Viola – James Ehnes (tracks: 6-8). Violin – James Ehnes (tracks: 1-5). Recorded in Studio 7, BBC New Broadcasting House, Manchester 8 November 2009 (Violin Concerto No. 2), 1 November 2010 (Violin Concerto No. 1) and 27 February 2011 (Viola Concerto).

1 & 2, Viola Concerto – James Ehnes. 12 Thursday Jan 2017. Posted by Thang Nguyen in Chandos. Bartok, James Ehnes, Noseda. Label : Chandos Format : Flac track Cover : Yes. Tracklist : Bela Bartók Violin Concerto No. 1, BB48a, Sz 36 Violin Concerto No. 2, Sz 112 Viola Concerto, BB 128, Sz. 120. James Ehnes (violin, viola) BBC Philharmonic, Gianandrea Noseda.

Performers: Orchestra: BBC Philharmonic Conductor: Gianandrea Noseda violin, viola: James Ehnes. Composer: Bela Bartok (1881-1945). Canadian violinist James Ehnes, ably backed by the BBC Philharmonic under the energetic Gianandrea Noseda, sets himself a challenge here with an original and difficult program, and then meets all the challenges involved in this fine Bartok disc. The Viola Concerto, left unfinished but fully sketched at Bartok's death in 1945 and completed by Tibor Serly four years later, is a product of the composer's more populist American style, with broad, pleasing melodies and a full-out Hungarian finale. The second violin concerto, especially, has the effect of a diamond whose aspects are viewed from different perspectives; it's worth the purchase price in itself.

Solo: James Ehnes violin and viola. Orchestra: BBC Philharmonic. Conductor: Gianandrea Noseda. 8 November 2009 (Violin Concerto No. Accompanied here by the BBC Philharmonic under Gianandrea Noseda, he is the soloist in Bartók’s two violin concertos, in which he plays the ‘Marsick’ Stradivarius of 1715, as well as in the viola concerto, performing on the ‘Rolla’ Giuseppe Guadagnini viola of 1793, on loan from the Fulton Collection. These three concertos are among the most striking examples of Bartók’s early, middle, and late periods, each showing a very different side of one of the great musical voices of all time; they are among my very favourite pieces to perform’.

Studio 7, New Broadcasting House, Manchester. James Ehnes, Gianandrea Noseda. Bartók: Violin Concertos Nos. 1 and 2; Viola Concerto.

BARTÓK Violin Concertos Nos 1 & 2. Composer or Director: Béla Bartók. His performances are warmly communicative and much aided by vivid support from the BBC Philharmonic under Gianandrea Noseda. So if you want all three works very persuasively performed, and the three-tier concerto context appeals, then there’s no contest: it has to be Ehnes. Where Ehnes takes a sweetly romantic view of the First Concerto’s amatory first movement, Renaud Capuçon is more soulfully romantic, even doleful at times. But he also does well by both concertos.
