The band went through a variety of line-up changes until they recorded their first album as a power trio consisting of Joe Walsh (guitars, lead vocals), Tom Kriss (bass) and Jim Fox (drums). Dale Peters replaced Kriss on Bass for the band's second and third albums. The band had two hit songs, "Funk and "Walk Away", which continue to be popular on classic rock and AOR stations.

James Gang were a rock band formed in Cleveland, Ohio in 1967. Though the band was not a huge commercial success, except in the Northeast Ohio area, the fame garnered by guitarist Joe Walsh has since made the group more notable. In 1970, the band released its second album James Gang Rides Again, which included the popular single "Funk By this time, Dale Peters had replaced Kriss on bass. The band opened for The Who during a tour of the United Kingdom. After two more albums, Thirds (with the single "Walk Away") and the live album James Gang Live in Concert, Walsh left the band (in late 1971) to embark on a solo career.

And unlike most other James Gang compilations, this set goes beyond the Joe Walsh years, as tracks from both the Domenic Troiano and Tommy Bolin eras are touched upon. The Bolin-era tracks will undoubtedly prove to be the set's big surprise to fans familiar with just the Walsh Gang, especially on such exceptional tracks as "The Devil Is Singing Our Song," "Standing in the Rain," and "Summer Breezes," all of which would be classic rock radio staples in a perfect world
