Died : July 05, 2007 in London, England. A true English eccentric. Jazz & blues singer, a prolific drinker & socialiser (not half!), writer & film critic, one-time anarchist, follower of the Surrealist movement, and in latter years, simply a lover of fishing; all things the public may perceive of the man. Bisexual by nature, however (openly) married twice and engaged in a straight lifestyle after his twenties-thirties flamboyancy; again the association between the norm and surrealism in his sexuality, like many things, was something George found attractive in his life.

George Melly, who has died aged 80, was one of the most genial and genuinely popular figures in the world of British entertainment. Dressed like a 30s gangster or a 40s Harlem hipster, a huge hat on his large head, his ample figure and rubbery face, with its mischievous hint of Mr Toad, were warmly welcomed wherever he went.

Goodtime George - George Melly. A collection of George's material, mostly standard trad jazz numbers recorded between mid 1950's to late 1960's. A number of tracks I'd never heard before, all worth listening to, as this was before hard living had affected his voice. Well produced too, possibly digitally cleaned, but no mention of this on the CD notes. Notably missing was one of his famous live numbers - was it ever get recorded? - the In-Betweenies, about gender challenged people put to the tune of the the old Ovalteenies advert  . Having seen George Melly live, this CD shows just why George was the best male jazz singer that this country ever produced. He sings jazz just as it should be sung, from the heart, and with fun. A simply marvellous CD. Best-selling in CDs. See all.

George Best is the debut album by The Wedding Present. It was released in October 1987 by their own record company, Reception Records. After self-releasing five singles on Reception Records label, the band turned to recording their first album, continuing their collaboration with producer Chris Allison, who had produced their previous single, "My Favourite Dress". The album's somewhat tinny sound reflects the low recording budget.
