Five Years" is a song written by David Bowie, recorded on 15 November 1971, and released as the opening track on the album The Rise and Fall of Ziggy Stardust and the Spiders from Mars in 1972. The song tells of an Earth doomed to destruction in five years and the aftermath of this knowledge. Bowie is rumoured to have chosen the length of time, five years, as a result of a dream in which his deceased father told him he must never fly again and would die in five years.

The first was a highly complex concept album apparently on the theme of humanity living in a zoo and being controlled by cosmic, religious and commercial forces. The second was loosely on the theme of water, which Brown had declared four years earlier would be the subject of the second album by the Crazy World. It was musically more conventional than the first, much less heavy, though stranger in places. At that point, the British theatrical rocker who brought us the Crazy World of Arthur Brown in '68 had no way of knowing that he would come to be seen as a major pioneer in not only progressive rock and heavy metal, but the entire concept of what makes a stage show.
years, that's all we've got Five years Five years Five years Five years. Perhaps one of the best album openers of all time, Five Years crescendos beautifully. A sparse fade in introduces a few verses set to piano, chronicling the panic that accompanies news of Earth’s imminent demise. Bowie crams in details, mostly focusing on the people. Then it soars and becomes a love song, with Bowie’s narrator desperately clinging to the memory of a lost love as he comes to terms with his mortality. The stage is set for Ziggy’s entrance.
