Sexing the Cherry (1989) is a novel by Jeanette Winterson. Set in 17th century London, Sexing the Cherry is about the journeys of a mother, known as The Dog Woman, and her protégé, Jordan. They journey in a space-time flux: across the seas to find exotic fruits such as bananas and pineapples; and across time, with glimpses of "the present" and references to Charles I of England and Oliver Cromwell. The mother’s physical appearance is somewhat "grotesque".

Sexing the Cherry is Kundera, it’s Immortality with its interchangeable lives over time. I admire both Kundera and Calvino, and the Chronicle definitely tipped me towards a new understanding, but there is also something uniquely Winterson at play here. Sexing the Cherry revolves around the story of a son named Jordan and his mother the Dog Woman, who scoops him out of the Thames as an infant.

Sexing the Cherry is Jeanette Winterson’s third novel, following Oranges Are Not the Only Fruit (1985) and The Passion (1988). She is capable of drastic action; after the Restoration in 1661, she joyfully witnesses the execution of the regicides who condemned King Charles I and does her own part by beheading her grim Puritan acquaintances, Preacher Scroggs and Neighbor Firebrace.

It is a story about freedom and chains, about making choices and exploring the world outside. It is harsh reality and fantastical imagination. Frankenstein and Sexing the Cherry both have monsters who maybe only be monsters because they have been alienated, and hated because they are so different. Society shuns them, can't accept them, and the anger and pain build up. Deep behind all this anger and pain, are two rather loving creatures, lost in thought.

Jeanette Winterson, Sexing the Cherry. words jeanette winterson sexing the cherry. From a book called Sexing the Cherry by Jeanette Winterson: Let him have his boys nights. Be soft and yielding to his face but have a spine of steel. There is no need to reveal too much about yourself, because he thinks he knows you inside and out. Then, allow him to see a glimpse of another aspect of yourself. If you’re always sugar-sweet, show a sad side or an unexpected streak of cruelty. If you’re always aloof, pretend at vulnerability for just a moment.

Sexing the Cherry (1989) is a novel by Jeanette Winterson. She is a giant, wrapped in a skirt big enough to serve as a ship’s sail and strong enough to fling an elephant. Sexing the Cherry features elements of magical realism and can be said to contribute to the promotion of the "Other" in the literary world. Sexing the Cherry is a postmodernist work and features many examples of intertextuality. It also incorporates the fairy tale of the Twelve Dancing Princesses.
