De Graaff, for his part, not only comps superbly but shows why he is widely seen as a formidable soloist whose dexterity and discernment are second to none. Beets and Ineke, each of whom is a stellar soloist in his own right, provide a secure bedrock on which everyone is able to unwind and from which they launch their always luminous and unerring broadsides.

Tenor Conclave is an album by Hank Mobley, Al Cohn, John Coltrane and Zoot Sims. However, as Coltrane's profile grew in the following years after his contract with the label had expired, Prestige re-released it in 1962 as an apparent 'new' album, with a different cover prominently displaying Coltrane's name.

Fortunately, pianist Rein De Graaf's got the proceedings here on rock-solid territory – providing just the right sort of swing to keep things moving, yet also keep things in control – while both Ronnie Cuber and Nick Brigola open up on the bigger horns – reminding us why they're some of the few players able to carry forward the deftly soulful legacies of earlier baritone greats like Pepper Adams or Serge Chaloff! . Cuber and Brignola are "on" for the duration, with exciting and spirited solos and great interaction. The trio backing the horns is led by the well-known Dutch pianist, Rein De Graaf, the ostensible leader of the session who also organized the group. While the trio seems a touch distant, the playing is perfectly competent. A "must" for admirers of the bari, and a more than decent hard bop jam, Baritone Explosion is great fun and a good example of the power of the big sax.
